I would get both if you can catch Painter on Humble. At $350, it might be worth it, if you are willing to overlook the issues. Corel Painter is definetely worth $30 if you can catch it when it is available as a Humblebundle. Clip is worth the ful price of $50 if you can't find it on sale like I did. Seeing as I got Clip for $25(pro version not EX, single license) it was well worth the money.

Once you have a serial for an older version you are eligable for the upgrade price( which is usually around $99 to $150).Ĭlips upgrades are free for life(I think)and they seem to add features pretty often. Honestly that is how I have been updating my Corel Painter for the past 6 or so years. Right now Corel Painter 2021 is avaiable on Humblebundle for $30, plus you get a whole bunch of add on brushes as well as Corel Paintshop pro, Particleshop and Visual studio. Both can do text although I think Painter may have more options. Both can export psd, neither can export pdf. I'm not the only one to express that feeling. While I still like Corel Painters brushes I find that Clip just works, while with Painter I constantly feel like I'm fighting the software.

Painter has more settings for everything, which is why the interface can be more cluttered and is less user friendly. Both programs also offer some photo editing features like adjustment of color, sat, contrast, etc. Both have very customizable brushes but with Painter you can get a bit more in depth with brush settings(some may argue a little to much, as it makes the learning curve much steeper and the interface more cluttered). Both programs you can customize almost every feature with a custom keyboard shortcut. That's why I really prefer Corel brushes applying and mixing colors feels a bit more natural. Clip and Photoshop are basically stamps that are in a line. I forgot to mention both programs can import photoshop brushes(abr.) which opens it up to more brushes than you would want.Ĭorel brushes do not work the same as Clip and Photoshop brushes. It's closer to real paints. Clip does however have a lot of free ones available. Clip has a decent amount of brushes, enough to use it without adding more. There arent a lot of free brushes and you have to purchase packs to add more.

These and many more are problems that have plagued Painter since I first started using it in the 90's so it's pretty clear they don't know how to fix it. I have had the lasso tool stop working until you restart the program. It also crashes or freezes more often than other programs. Sometimes palettes will be off screen which is a pain. It also very buggy, for example right now I can not cut/copy or paste. However, Painter is also one of the most unstable art programs that I have ever used( tried most of the ones available). It has some really interesting brushes called particle brushes which make every stroke unique. It also has all of the tools I use in one package so I don't have to switch between programs. I have also tried almost all of the painting software out there at one point or another.Ĭorel painter has one of the best brush engines around(only 2nd to Rebelle).
I have a more painterly style, just for reference. I switch to Photoshop for about 5 years then switched back to Painter and now Clip Studio.
